Prices for college tuition and fees have increased by 2.3% over the 12 months ended April, matching the annual rise in March, according to data published on May 13, 2025, by the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS collects pricing on thousands of goods and services as a part of their Consumer Price Index (CPI). The CPI is a measure of U.S. inflation at the consumer level.
Usually, college costs outpace the overall rate of inflation, but this has not been the case lately. The latest annual inflation rate is 2.3%, which is the same for now as the rate of increase in prices for college tuition and fees.

Adjusting the Price of College Tuition and Fees for Inflation
For some perspective, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reported that the average tuition and fees at public 4-year institutions were $9,400 in the academic year 2019-2020. NCES has not yet published any prices beyond 2019-2020, but BLS CPI data can be used to calculate how much they have changed over time. For example, comparing inflation data from September 2020 and June 2022 shows that pricing increased by 2.02%, bringing the average price to $9,589.76.
The data and calculations involved in finding the increase follow:
- The average college tuition and fees costs for academic year 2019-2020 was $9,400.
- The CPI average for college tuition and fees in September 2020 was 880.234.
- The CPI average for college tuition and fees in June 2022 was 898.003.
The following formula shows how to adjust the price for inflation:
Academic year 2019-2020 Price x (CPI for June 2022 / CPI September 2020) = Adjusted Price
Using the actual numbers:
$9,400 x (898.003/880.234) = $9,589.76
