Inflation in New York, Newark and Jersey City Metropolitan Area

Prices for goods in services in the New York-Newark-Jersey City area increased 0.1% in April and advanced 3.7% from a year ago, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) released May 10, 2023, by the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

*The pair of 2023 data points in the chart above are the latest available 12-month based rates from the most recent CPI report.

These rates compare to the national inflation rates of 0.4% in April and 4.9% year-over-year, as well as the New York-Newark-Jersey City area’s previous monthly and annual changes of 0.1% lower and 4.6% higher.

Additional Headline Inflation Figures for the New York Area

The areas food prices rose 0.3% in April after rising 0.5% in March. They surged 6.7% year-over-year.

Energy prices for the month fell 0.6% after falling 4.9% previously, and they dropped 10.6% from a year ago.

Stripping food and energy, so-called core inflation (all items less food and energy) increased 0.1% in April from 0.2% in March and it advanced by 4.7% year-over-year.

The New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Core Based Statistical Area includes Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester Counties in New York; Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, and Union Counties in New Jersey; and Pike County in Pennsylvania.
